Doctor, doctor thyself? Mental Health, Emotional Wellbeing, and Self-care for Mental Health Providers is an important process which can be easily overlooked while caring for others. Quite often can be taboo discussion amongst colleagues. While providers know the effects of physical/mental/emotional/spiritual wellbeing on health, some find it difficult to prioritize their own care. This workshop aims to help mental health professionals identify their own physical symptoms, behaviors in the workplace, and learn useful tools beyond the typical mainstream stereotypes. Create a lifestyle of health and wellness that balances caregiving and caring for the self. Instructor, Jennifer Vazquez, LCSW, will discuss the mental health needs of providers in a sensitive and productive manner that promotes self-care, supports and recognizes the human aspect of the field, and managing their own life stressors while maintaining their roles as providers. Stockton’s new “Understanding the Spectrum of Eating Disordered Behaviors” Certificate Series, taught by Suzanne Rubinetti, LCSW, features five workshops to address the many aspects of clinical work within the eating disorders. Each workshop is 2.5 hours long, and will focus on various aspects of disordered eating, OCD, family/social dynamics, Orthorexia, and Intuitive Eating. Clinicians in this series will learn the definitions, clinical presentations of the spectrum of eating disorders (via DSM 5), and clinical treatment strategies. Participants will also hear case study examples, learn how to include CBT, exposure therapy, psychodynamic psychotherapy, and mindfulness in treatment, and develop realistic recovery goals with clients. With many overlapping challenges in disordered eating and obsessive compulsive disorder, this series will begin with a 2-part “Eating Disorders & OCD” component which is required for completing the remaining sections of the program. Clinicians who do not complete the first two meetings will not be permitted to complete the series. This series is appropriate for all level clinicians working with both adult and adolescent populations.
  • Meeting 1 - Eating Disorders and OCD: Part 1 (4/26/24)
  • Meeting 2 - Eating Disorders and OCD: Part 2 (5/3/24) - Eating disorders and OCD are two extremely complicated illnesses and their symptoms often overlap. This two-part, lecture-based training will contain a comprehensive understanding of the overlap, and serve as mandatory “introductory workshops” for this certificate series. Participants will learn a broader understanding of the complexities in treating OCD co-occurring with eating disorders. Participants will also have a greater understanding of how to treat eating disorder symptoms, and identify important elements in a comprehensive treatment plan. Exposure therapy and desensitization will be discussed. Breakout discussion rooms, interactive exercises, role playing, and case material will be used to further increase learning. Please note: Attendance for the first two sessions (Eating Disorders and OCD Parts 1 and 2) will be required to complete the certificate program.

  • Meeting 3 - Orthorexia (5/17/24) - Orthorexia was defined in 1998, and means an obsession with proper or healthy eating. While it is not a DSM 5 diagnosed illness, in the last 5 years, the symptoms of orthorexia have surged and can have dangerous side effects. It is critical for clinicians to understand the complications of this disorder. In this course we will define what Orthorexia is and why it is such a complex disorder. Using lecture, case illustrations, video clips, role play and small group discussions we will look at the differences between orthorexia and other eating disorders and discuss treatment strategies.

  • Meeting 4 - Intuitive Eating (5/31/24) - Recently there has been an abundance of information on intuitive and mindful eating. The two are different and the learning process is challenging. Intuitive eating is a multi-layered practice that can only be successful if a detailed inquiry of an individual's "food story" is understood by the practitioner. This course will examine the process and participants will learn how to conduct a detailed food history with their clients as well as learn other useful skills. We will also explore the reasons why the development of intuitive eating is so challenging, and illustrate it using detailed case examples. This workshop will include lecture, interactive exercises on mindful eating, video clips and discussion.

  • Meeting 5 - Intergenerational Food Trauma (6/14/24) - Taking the time to understand the depth of historical traumas that have involved significant food and eating issues in the generations in a family provides critical information for the treatment of eating disorders. Conducting a detailed food inquiry and exploration of the food story through generations critically impacts treatment goals. This course will address sensitive topics such as genocide and long-term cultural/religious/family food behaviors resulting from surviving these traumatic events. In this workshop you will learn how to gather all the food history, important cultural information, and prepare realistic treatment goals.

Racial framing can have strong effects on programs, policies, and even evaluations. Racial framing developed as a justification for the exploitation of minorities and has been a primary causal factor in the persistence of racism. By being aware of its pattern, structure, origins, and how racism framing generates effects, we can significantly reduce its influence, thus enhancing the rigor of our studies by controlling for a potential bias that’s often convert. Stories play a critical role in framing and reframing processes. This course is for everyone seeking to gain an understanding of Racial Frames and its negative affect on us as a whole society. “Understanding the Grieving Client: Familial and Traumatic Loss Certificate” is a collection of five courses taught by Jennifer Vazquez, LCSW, specially curated for clinicians working with clients coping with grief and the deep loss of losing loved ones. This series is designed for new and seasoned professionals in private practice or conducting therapy on an outpatient basis. The full series provides 15.0 Clinical CEUs to social workers, licensed marriage and family therapists, and licensed professional counselors. Please note: attendance in the first "intro session" is mandatory for completion of the series. Participants who do not attend the "intro session" will not be permitted to complete the remaining sessions. The five individual workshop descriptions are as follows:

  • Introduction to Grief - Wednesday, May 15, 2024 (10:00am to 1:30pm)- Participants of this “Intro” course will gain a detailed understanding of an expected clinical grief presentation, environmental factors (family dynamics, employment, finances, etc.) that are affected after a death, as well as the basic framework for conceptualizing and treating the grieving client. This course is designed for professionals working with clients who have experienced death of a family member, friend, patient, etc. Please note: this session is mandatory.

  • Grief and Death of Spouse/Partner - Wednesday, June 5, 2024 - Participants of this course will discuss the impact of death and grief suffered with the loss of a spouse, partner, and/or significant other. Often regarded as only second to losing a child, losing a spouse/partner will have a multi-year symptom presentation. This course will review the “business of grief” (including events such as memorial and estate planning), the therapist's role in providing support, grieving with minor children, dating after the loss of a spouse/partner, and overall family dynamics. This course is designed for professionals working with clients who have experienced the death of a spouse or partner.

  • Grief and Death of a Child - Wednesday, June 26, 2024 - Participants of this course will discuss the deep impact surrounding the death of a child and how losing a child changes grieving parents.  This course will outline grief on a four-year time line (including a symptoms presentation, suicide assessment, and the therapist role in providing support), family dynamics, workplace impacts, and restoring ‘homeostasis’.  This course is designed for professionals working with clients who have experienced the death of a child of any age.

  • Grief and Frontline Workers - Wednesday, July 31, 2024 - Participants of this course will discuss the impact of death and grief frontline workers (Doctors, Nurses, Paramedics, EMTs, Behavioral Health Staff, etc.) regularly face in their professional careers.  We will define frontline workers,  discuss the often-overlooked support staff, and review the goals and ethics surrounding educated professionals in these fields. Additional clinical work will be centered around the impact of the COVID Pandemic/”Return to Normal” resentment, Psychological First Aid, and supporting those considering retirement and/or career change due to grief and trauma. This course is designed for professionals in private practice or conducting therapy on an outpatient basis.

  • Grief and Ambiguous Loss - Wednesday, August 21, 2024 (10:00am to 12:30pm) - Participants of this course will learn to define “Ambiguous Loss”, both physical and psychological, recognize various types of loss which land in this category - including miscarriage, divorce, immigration, incarceration, estranged family, and more - and how these are different than loss resulting from death. Participants will also review treatment goals and guidelines for working with clients in clinical settings. This interactive session is designed for professionals in private practice or conducting therapy on an outpatient basis.
